You of course love your parents and probably have no problem being around the as much as a vacation together requires. But for a spouse it can be stressful. They aren’t used to your parents quirks the way you are and might have less patiences for them. And they might feel they have to be “good behavior” all week and so might not find the trip as relaxing as everyone else assumes it is.

I especially like your tip of hitting the most exciting exhibits first in case your children get overwhelmed. I would imagine my kids might have a difficult time in such a crowd, so this is a good strategy!

It’s a memorable and inexpensive souvenir.

Comment on Ski School: The Best Gift Non-Skier Parents Can Give their Kids by Katy Hope https://welltraveledkids.com/ski-school-the-best-gift-non-skier-parents-can-give-their-kids/#comment-1192 Wed, 11 May 2016 23:52:28 +0000 http://welltraveledkids.com/?p=4978#comment-1192 Even for kids of parents who ski, we found ski school was way more effective at teaching our child to ski than we were. There is just something about being with other kids and a teacher who is not the parent that often works better. Our 5 year old was riding the lift and doing s turns after one day of class, when the day before it took him hours to do one run with mom.

Our family has been skiing, but my husband is much more proficient than I am. I hope to still try and learn because I too dream of those amazing family ski vacations. Perhaps I’ll just be happy sipping a warm toddy while reading by the fire after a few runs on the bunny slope. 🙂

However, Harry will need to ski more often to progress in the sport and become accomplished at it. Also, 40 years old is not too old to learn to ski. You and your husband should enroll in lessons the next time you take Harry skiing and learn how to ski. You already know from Harry’s experience that is doesn’t take too long to learn to ski at a beginner or even intermediate level. One of the biggest things you will gain from learning to ski, besides the joy of skiing itself, is the time on the lift you will get to spend as a family riding up the slopes. Opportunities for all kinds of discussions as Harry grows through his adolescent and teen years will be made available for you, your husband and Harry. And then eventually, you will likely also get to ski with your grandkids as Harry will certainly want his kids to become proficient at snowsports too. The time to prepare for future is now, I hope you and your husband take ski lessons this next winter season! Imagine the look of joy on Harry’s face when you tell him he has inspired you both to learn to ski as well. Happy skiing!!!

I have taught people in their 70’s how to ski. I did not start skiing until I was 45, and I have been on the snow for 20 years, and having taught the last 14.

Sarah 40 is still young. I learned how to ski when I was 53. I am now 61. Eight years later I have skied places like Vail, Beaver Creek, Loveland, A-Basin, Breckenridge and Winter Park. I live in the Midwest and became an instructor at my local ski area Cascade Mountain in Portage Wisconsin. I ski with people who are in their 70’s and 80’s. It’s a life long sport. Give it a try while you are still young and join that kid of yours in having the fun of a lifetime! (Come to Cascade Mountain I’ll teach you how to ski. It’s just 3 hours up the road from you.) Thanks!
