Family Adventure in Costa Rica

Disclosure: We had a wonderful family adventure in Costa Rica. I received complimentary tickets to Club Rio Outdoor Center for purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.

My husband and I had visited Costa Rica about 10 years ago and we always looked forward to returning.  We have just returned from a trip with our family and my husband and I and the kids all have boasted that it was one of the best trips we have ever been on!  We highly recommend a family adventure in Costa Rica for active families looking for a fun family trip.

What made our family adventure in Costa Rica trip so great?

Let me tell you about our stay at The Springs Resort.

Luxury with a view

The Springs Resort in the area of La Fortuna exceeded our expectations.  I loved all of the room layouts they offered from studios to one, two, three bedroom suites and villas.  We chose the “three bedroom premier suite” which was big enough for two families.  We loved having the family room area to spread out and most important was the large balcony with couch and table seating and a hot tub.  The views of Arenal volcano from our balcony could not be beat!

Tip- Choose a room high on the property and a balcony is a must!  If you want a full kitchen, book a villa. Our room did not have a kitchen only a mini bar.  Also don’t hesitate to book airport transportation through The Springs from San Jose since the roads are winding and bumpy.

Outstanding Service –

I was hesitant staying on property for four nights, since I usually like to explore the local community, especially for dinner.  However at The Springs, not only is it a long (and bumpy) road in and out of the resort (however I just saw that they paved the road), the restaurant choices proved to be varied enough to satisfy us every night.

They have five total restaurants (three are open for dinner) and they do something interesting – you can order any menu at any restaurant.  This was great for families – the adults can eat sushi and the kids can have a cheeseburger.

We were most impressed with the service.  The Springs’ employees get to know you and your family on your first days of arrival, and went out of their way to remember what the kids might have ordered for dinner the past nights, or what you ordered to drink.  Nice touch!

Our group loved the sushi restaurant and its location next to the game room. Kids could go play and come back to the table to eat.

Often restaurants have no entertainment after dark, but The Springs hit this on the mark with the game room, pool table, darts and chess tables.  There was something for kids of all ages! Room service was also wonderful.  The service at The Springs was truly top notch!

Tip – For an early dinner one night, we ordered from the restaurant that closes at 5 pm at the swim up bar and were able to enjoy a different menu with great sandwiches and salads while enjoying our drinks at the swim up bar!

Club Rio Outdoor Center is the adventure park on the property of The Springs at the base of the Arenal River (a shuttle runs down the mountain a few times an hour). It is open to hotel guests as well as to the public.

We loved the activities that were offered and the guides were amazing with the kids.  Our kids loved horseback riding, tubing, kayaks and rock climbing.  We also toured the animal sanctuary at Club Rio where we learned about their rescue program.

The only local adventures we had to leave the property for was zip lining.  We chose Sky Trek and all ages loved the high flying thrills!  Our five year old went with a guide, which worked out great (book that ahead of time as they were short on guides).  Also we had Sky Trek pick us up at The Springs and the service was great.

Tip – Spend your mornings at Club Rio, eat lunch at the great open air restaurant, than head back up to The Springs for an afternoon relaxing in the many springs and pools!

Springs and Pools

How could I even forget to mention the twenty-eight pools and hot springs…… The staff does a great job of explaining the different springs and temperatures.  And they also have some pools that are not heated.

Of course our families favorites were the Monkey Slide at Los Perdidos springs and the swim up bar at the main pool.  The kids loved going down the monkey slide and then picking their smoothie for the day and drinking it at the swim up bar!  And those afternoon views of the volcano from the springs were just magical!

We loved The Springs Resort and on 165 acres with less than 100 rooms, you often felt like you had your own private oasis whether on the privacy of your own balcony or enjoying the views of the volcano from the hot springs.  Service stood out at this property and our family can’t wait to go back!

As far as Costa Rica, every person we encountered was just wonderful.  It is a wonderful country!

Living in South Florida with her husband Todd, they are always looking for places to vacation well with their family. They love being on the water and beach activities, from boating to jet skiing to snorkeling. As the kids get older it is important to find the balance between working hard and showing their kids the experiences of traveling to new places. This summer they started a United States map project where they can track all of the places they have visited as a family.
